Auntie Emmie's Suitcase
I had the pleasure of taking photos of Sue Davies for her new book profile. It is the story of Emmie Chester's life in France told in words and pictures as it emerged from the contents of her battered old suitcase.
In Sue's words: I have just published a book in words and pictures about my Great Aunt's service in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in France during World War One. She never spoke of her time in France. It was only many years after her death that her story was revealed in a battered old suitcase she brought back in 1919 containing a jumble of letters, photographs, documents and souvenirs from that time. What emerged was a life of comradeship, austerity, romance and sadness. It also gave an insight into the changing role of women in society during the early twentieth century.
